Data Catalogue:
PRODUCT DESIGN

Partnered with Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA) to define their new data catalogue platform.

The dual-faceted ecosystem needed to blend a robust CMS for internal data curation with a customer-facing metadata search application. It demanded clarity amid tight timelines and budgets.

Without a defined product vision, NHRA risked fragmented efforts that could undermine their mandate: empowering researchers, policymakers, and communities with accessible, actionable insights to mitigate disaster risks and understand historic disasters better.

DESIGN MATURITY

The strategic Approach
I guided NHRA and the development consultancy through the process of leading product stratgey with a human-cented lense and design thinking approach. I guided NHRA through workshops to define the vision and success metrics (e.g., faster and easier data discovery). Conducted user research with staff, research providers and potential customers which revealed friction points in current data accessibility, search intuitiveness and how they use the data. Collaborating with engineers to align prototypes with budget and goals, embedding agile principles to balance innovation with feasibility.

The impact
In a swift discovery phase we delivered a clear vision of what the platform was, how it would function and streamline CMS workflows and search. The work elevated design as a strategic driver, boosting cross-team momentum and positioning NHRA for a resilient, user-focused data ecosystem.

"Emma delivered an outstanding Discovery and user journey mapping engagement for GIS People and our client. She masterfully managed the entire discovery process - from creating defining the direction, facilitating discovery workshops and engaging key stakeholders to running surveys, confirming requirements, and producing a clear direction and high-quality wireframes. The result was top-notch, delivered on time and within budget. I highly recommend Emma for her professionalism, expertise, and ability to achieve excellent outcomes."
