Rapid Design Maturity:
Proving Impact in 7 Months - Government Agency QLD

In the fast-paced world of consulting, where projects often sprint rather than marathon, traditional design maturity models that are built for long-haul tracking don't work if you're a consultant on a short engagement. I've always championed embedding design's value swiftly: up-skilling non-designers, demystifying designs value and what 'design' really is and is not.

I ran a research and assessment initiative with a client as a proof-of-concept:
could we deliver measurable design impact in just 7 months, while surfacing gaps to supercharge the clients' broader evolution?

DESIGN MATURITY

I set out to validate three core hypotheses:
1: Can design drive tangible value and maturity gains across a project and organisation in under 7 months?

2: Does it spark positive shifts for users, teams, clients, projects, and the business at large?

3: Will the insights illuminate scalable opportunities for organisation-wide uplift?

The result? An unequivocal yes!

Proven maturity surge:
The client's design maturity went from 2.5 to 4.5 (on a 5-point scale) in just 7 months, laying a scalable foundation for sustained excellence.

Positive ripple effect:
Design didn't just elevate processes, it transformed user experiences, embedded continuous customer feedback loops, forged tighter team cohesion, and gave visibility on designs value and human-centred design at board level.

Strategic gap-finding:
The findings spotlighted high-leverage opportunities, empowering cross-functional leaders to prioritise inclusive practices, agile integration, and customer-centric roadmaps that echoed far beyond the project.
